Different Types of Phobias | Description With Causes

Phobia is one of the most common anxiety illnesses in the world. When a person has a phobia, he/she tends to avoid the specific thing. The word phobia, derived from the Greek word Phobos, which means fear or horror. It is a type of anxiety disorder that results in a person feeling extreme, irrational fear about a living, thing, place, situation, or object. The phobias are diagnosable. The person can experience distress when facing the source of the phobia. The phobia can cause the individual to feel anxiety, and in some cases, it also leads to panic attacks. Here are some different types of phobias:

Agoraphobia

Agoraphobia, the fear of open spaces, is the phobia of places or situations from where one can’t escape. The people who have agoraphobia, fear to be in large crowds or trapped outside the house. Such people are mostly introvert and avoid social gatherings. 

Glossophobia

The fear of speaking in front of the public or audience, and also known as performance anxiety. Individuals with phobia have critical physical symptoms when they think about social gatherings. Glossophobia treatments can include medications and therapy.

Acrophobia

An extreme fear of heights, especially when the person is not particularly high, also known as the fear of falling. People with the phobia avoid rock climbing, bridges, or the higher floor of buildings. The symptoms of phobia are vertigo, dizziness, sweating, and feeling of losing consciousness.

Claustrophobia

It is an irrational fear of enclosed or tight spaces, which causes people to have a panic attack. If the phobia is severe, it can result in preventing the person from riding in a car or elevators.

Aviophobia

Commonly known as the fear of flying, and the patient can feel anxiety while thinking about flying. The person is afraid of flying in an airplane or helicopter. Acute stress can treat by anti-anxiety medications and with exposure therapy.

Dentophobia

Dentophobia is a common fear of dentists, and it can be mild or severe, and the consequences are severe. It generally occurs after a bad experience at a dentist’s clinic. 

Hemophobia

The abnormal fear of blood, the sufferers, experience a decrease in heart rate and blood pressure when coming in direct contact with blood. In some situations, the person can faint when they come in contact with the blood.

Nyctophobia

The fear of nighttime and darkness, the people experience severe fear that causes stress and anxiety. It begins as a childhood fear, and after past adolescence, it is considered as a phobia.
