Facts about the Human Brain

The human brain controls all the activities of the body. It also commands the central human nervous system. It receives the signals from sensory organs and sends information to the muscles. The human brain is the most complicated part of the body. The human brain is so complex that there are many things about the brain that doctors and scientists don’t know. The brain helps us to think, reason, learn and remember things. There are some fun facts about the human brain; one must know:

Weight of the Brain

An adult human brain approximately weighs 3 pounds, i.e., 1.5 kilograms. It is said that the human brain is the largest brain of all vertebrates relative to body size. The largest brain is of the sperm whale and weighs about 20 pounds.

Water and Fat composition

The brain comprises of 60% of fat, and about 75% of the brain is made up of water. It means that dehydration, even in small amounts, harms the brain functions. The brain is one of the fattest organs in the human body.

Effects of Video Games

Computer and video games help in improving cognitive abilities. Like our body, the brain needs exercise too. The exercise can be done by solving puzzles and playing brain games. The brain games help the brain to work properly and effectively.

Remembering Details

Traumatic events affect the brain’s ability to remember things and details. The study shows that the eyewitnesses of criminal suspects are 50 percent accurate. It is difficult for the brain to remember the details of someone one doesn’t know.

Alcohol Effects

Consumption of alcohol for a long time affects memory issues and reduced cognitive function. Alcohol affects the brain, which involves blurry vision, unsteady walk, slurred speech, and more. However, one can become sober after some hours. Long term drinking can affect the brain permanently, and it’s hard to sober up again.

Brain Freeze

It occurs when something you eat or drink is cold. It causes pain in the forehead. The frozen food or drink can chill blood vessels and arteries in the back of the throat, which include the ones that take blood to the brain. They got constrict when cold and open up after sometime when they are warm again.

Dreams

Dreams are a combination of imagination and psychological factors and show that the brain is working while sleeping. The dreams indicate that the brain is healthy and can effectively work in any situation.

Transfer of Information

Information runs between neurons at different speeds and transferred to the brain. The brain has approximately 100 billion neurons. The neurons move information at different rates. The fastest speed for transferring information between the neurons is about 250 mph.
