This is an open book exam that is worth 50 points. This exam covers weeks 6 – 8 and chapters 7 – 10 in Brown. You may refer to the book, the lecture notes, videos, and any additional readings provided with this course to develop your answers. However, I will be looking for answers to be in your own words and that demonstrate you have learned key points from unit materials.

1. Agricultural productivity has increased as a result of three things. Please name them. (3 points)

2. Can rising levels of crop productivity continue indefinitely? Explain your answer. (4 points)

3. Name three types of irrigation and describe the form that is the most water efficient. (4 points)

4. Define Ecosystem Services and provide one example from Plan B. (4 points)

5. Discuss the connection between forests and rainfall, and provide a brief example of a country’s lack of respect for such a connection. (4 points)

6. If you purchase wood for a construction project, what name should you look for that will tell you the wood was grown and harvested in a sustainable manner? (3 points)

7. Brown suggests providing subsidies as one way to begin implementing Plan B. Define subsidy and provide one positive and one negative example. (4 points)

8. Name and describe the three models of social change that Brown refers to. Which does he feel is most attractive to our current ecological crisis? (6 points)

9. Define Wartime Mobilization and discuss how it applies to addressing climate change. (2 points)

10. One way to begin to restore the Earth is to reduce pressure on forests. Developed countries like the United States differ from developing countries as to what type of pressure is placed on forests. From the readings, discuss one suggestion for reducing the United States’ use of forest products and one suggestion to reduce Kenya’s use of forest products. (4 points)

 11. Define Universal Basic Education and explain why it is important to reducing populations (4 points).

12. Discuss two reasons why becoming a vegetarian will allow you to positively make a difference towards restoring the Earth. (4 points)

13. There has been publicity about the negative effects of raising shrimp and salmon in aquaculture operations. However, China has developed a fish polyculture that allows for the production of efficient protein. Compare the positives of China’s polyculture techniques and then contrast that to the negatives of farming salmon and shrimp. (4 points)
