Week 1 Assignment  

Research Topic. In Week Five, you will complete a Final Paper on your ethnography of speaking. In preparation for this paper, this week you will propose a site or community where you will (after receiving approval from your instructor) complete your observations. See the description of your Final Paper under the Components of Course Evaluation section of this guide, or under Week Five of your course, for more information on potential sites for observation as well as details about what you'll need to do. Before beginning your proposal, read the following document from the American Anthropological Association:

Statement on Ethics: Principles of Professional Responsibilities.

Your proposal must:

a. Describe the group you will observe.

b. Identify when and where you will conduct your research.

c. Explain how you will adhere to the ethical guidelines set out by the American Anthropological

Association (AAA). In doing this, make sure to:

? Consider the implications of your research. Is there any potential for harm to come to the research participants because of your observations?

? If you will be interacting with research participants and gathering data from them directly, address how you will make sure that all research participants are aware of the purpose of your research and how you will obtain informed consent from them. Keep in mind that the AAA's Statement on Ethics indicates that, "Normally, the observation of activities and events in fully public spaces is not subject to prior consent." (2012, p.7).

? Address how you will protect the privacy and confidentiality of those who are involved in your research.

There is no specific length requirement for this assignment, but you must demonstrate that you have completely

thought through your proposed research project and the ethical concerns that may arise from it. Be sure to include

a title page with your assignment.
