DQ1 Hegemonic English. Based on the article “Ideologies of Language: Some Reflections on Language and U.S. Law” and the textbook, discuss what is a language ideology. How is the English-only movement an example of a language ideology, and how is this expressed in the two court cases discussed in Haviland’s article? Do you think the American justice system should revise its assumptions about language? If yes, how?

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7. As a continuation of this conversation, discuss whether or not you would like to learn a new language. If so, which one and why? How do you think this new language might relate to the values in its country of origin?

DQ2 Mock Spanish. Discuss examples of “Mock Spanish” as illustrated in Jane Hill’s article found in Reading 9.0 of the Anthropology of Language Workbook/Reader.Also take note of any examples of Mock Spanish that you have encountered in your own daily life. Explain how you think these examples are meant to be funny, or explain how they were not meant to be funny. Do they serve any other purpose? What do these examples tell us about the culture from which they come? Do you agree or disagree with Hill’s statement that Mock Spanish “constitutes a new type of racist discourse”…. [a type of] “elite racist discourse” (p. 174)? Why, or why not?
