Global Gender Issues. This week, you are required to answer only one of the following discussion post questions. You should indicate if you chose Option A or Option B in your original post. Please note that you will need to watch both required videos in order to respond to your peers. Your initial post should be at least 350 words in length and you are asked to include one additional scholarly source.

Option A: Cultural Management of Sexuality and Gender Expression

The textbook states that sexuality links the personal and the social, the individual and society, and the local and the global. Further, that all aspects of sexuality are socially shaped and regulated and within every culture there are measures for the management of sexuality and gender expression. Shereen El Feki explores these themes in her Ted Talks lecture, A little-told tale of sex and sensuality. While in Chapter 6 of your textbook, Lila Abu- Lughod analyzed the changing constructions of sexuality in Egyptian Bedouin weddings. In your response, consider how the examples provided in the text and the video reinforce the idea of cultural management of sexuality and gender expression.

Option B: Women and the State

The video, I wasn’t Always dressed like this, explores the decision to wear the Hijab, the Muslim headscarf, by young women in the West. In your discussion post, consider the reasoning presented in the video and put them in the perspective of the concepts covered in your textbook, in particular Bowen’s section in chapter 7. While maintaining a culturally relativist approach, discuss a) what reasons an individual women might have for wearing the hijab, b) whether this is appropriate attire in a Western state, and c) the meaning of wearing the hijab in at least two different cultural contexts.
