NYU Communications Shein Company Messaging Memorandum

Introduction

One of the most useful tasks we can do for a client is to analyze the quality of their existing messaging vis-à-vis their competitors.  This helps us to understand how their existing message strategy may be improved, based on the message objectives they hope to achieve.  In this assignment you are asked to analyze a client’s messages as well as those of its key competitor(s).

Directions:

Develop a Business memo that is 4-5 pages that includes the following:

A brief introduction to the client’s current objective.

A review of your client’s current messaging, using the messages available on the organization’s website or other key documents.

1. A review of the current messaging of one or two of your client’s key competitors, using the messages available on each organization’s website or other key documents.
2. To conduct your analysis you should refer to the message framework discussed in the course materials, which includes the following elements:
3. Level One – Messages that communicate facts, figures, details, and descriptors about the organization
4. Level Two – Messages that communicate an the organization’s strengths, benefits, & differentiators

Level Three – Messages that convey the personality, character, vision, and motivators of the organization

1. Choose the message levels and elements that are most relevant given your client's messaging objectives. Remember - when you are analyzing - you should cite at least 2 examples of a message that operates in that level.  In some cases, it may be more difficult to find Level Three messages; if this is the case, please describe what is missing from the current messaging to allow it to achieve Level Three status.
2. Finally, your memo should include a discussion of message recommendations.  Using the ABC 5 strategic questions (or CHC 6 questions) as context, discuss the following: (You do not need to answer all of the questions, just use them as criteria in your analysis):
3. Which organization or organizations do you think most effectively communicated to your target audience? 
4. What could your client do to make their current messaging strategy more effective? State what you mean by effective. How could your client communicate better to the target audience?
