SMC Cultures Using Different Criteria when Naming Babies Paper

MINI PERFORMANCE ASSIGNMENT #1- NAME ASSIGNMENT

For this assignment you will write and create a 2–3-minute video performance that answers the question, “What is the story of your name?”

Questions you may want to consider when working on this mini performance:

  • Is there a cultural significance to your name?
  • Is there a family history/story to your name?
  • Were you named after someone? Have you met them?
  • Do people have a difficult time pronouncing your name and how do you handle that?
  • Have you ever changed your name?
  • Do you have nicknames that you go by?

The Script/Production Concept

Script- is an outline and a word for word script of what you are saying in your performance

Production Concept- describe how you are going to shoot your video performance. It can be as straight forward as “I am opening my laptop and am going to film the story of my name like a VLOG.”If it a bit more elaborate, then just explain what you are doing. For example, “For this mini performance I am going to interview the person that I am named after in an edited 3-minute video.”

This document will be submitted on Canvas.

Performance/Video

Using your phone, tablet, laptop film a 2–3-minute video of the story of your name.

There are different approaches to this assignment, all are valid, don’t compare approach to anyone else, we all have different learning styles.

Option 1-

Some of you will outline you will create an outline to your story. These are the 3-5 things I want to focus on, the story of your name has a beginning, middle, and end.You will shoot your video.THEN you will transcribe your video and that will be your script.

Option 2-

Some of you will write and outline and then write out your story word for word and then shoot your video. It is okay to look at your paper during your video, please try your hardest to not turn on your camera and just read. This is a video performance, strive to be present, engaged, dynamic as you tell your story.

Option 3-

Some of you will turn on your camera, tell your story, with no outline, and then compile your script and production concept. Some of you know programs that co captioning, please feel free to share those with me and I will share them with the class.
