Pro-Position Topics

Required Resources

Read/review the following resources for this activity:

Textbook: pp. 94-103, 267-270

Lesson

Minimum of 1 article (academic or credible online source)

Apply the following writing resources to your posts:

Link (library article): Point: Vaccines Save Lives (Links to an external site.) (This link will take you to an overview of vaccines. Click on the title under Related Items in this overview area to access the article. This is a sample pro article.)

Link (multimedia presentation): Citing References in Text (Links to an external site.)

Link (website): APA Citation and Writing (Links to an external site.)

Initial Post Instructions

Part 1: Research & Review

Please review the Point: Vaccines Save Lives, an example of a pro article.

Note: The article was pulled from our Chamberlain library's Points of View Reference Center database. This resource is highly recommended, as it presents many of the topics in the General Education Healthcare field that may be applicable this term. To access the resource from our library website, choose Databases A to Z on the homepage. Locate and click on the Points of View database.  Scroll down to Health & Medicine. You will see a large list of potential topics ranging from Allergies in Schools to Vegetarianism. When you click on a topic (Vaccines, for example), you will see an overview of the topic, as well as points, counterpoints, and a guide to critical analysis.

For your initial post, develop your ideas about a selected topic by conducting an online search to find a recent pro article about your topic. The goal is to find an article that takes a clear pro position. Include the following in your post:

Name of the article

Author

URL

Brief summary of the article

The article can be an online source from credible websites or an academic resource from the Chamberlain Library. It must be cited in APA format. For pointers on APA citations, please refer to the Chamberlain Library’s Citation and Writing Assistance website (noted in the Required Resources).

Part 2: Application

For the second part of the initial post, address the following:

Discuss which of the topic generation methods from this week's lecture worked best for you and why (or did you use an alternate approach?).

How will you remain objective about your topic?

Who is your audience?

Based on the topic development completed so far, brainstorm 3 potential pros for your topic choice.

Follow-Up Post Instructions

Respond to at least two peers or one peer and the instructor. Strive to provide constructive criticism that will help your fellow students develop their own topics by asking questions, pointing to additional research, or providing professional and personal examples. Help your fellow peers to brainstorm potential pros for their topics. Since many of the topics we will deal with in this course are controversial, a respectful, professional tone is expected.

Note: If you see that someone has already received feedback from two peers, please choose to help a peer who has yet to obtain feedback.

Part 2: Application

Evaluate how effective the article's argument was using Toulmin's model. Detail as many of the 6 components as possible:

Claim: What was the article's main point? What's the thesis?

Grounds: What kinds of evidence did the author use to support his/her argument? Provide an example.

Warrants: Did the author(s) successfully connect the evidence to the main point? How so?

Backing: How credible were the sources the author(s) applied? How does credulity affect your overall response?

Qualifiers: Did you notice any absolutes (all, every, each) or limiters (some, several, many)? How did they add or subtract from the argument?

Rebuttal: Did the author(s) present any points of opposition and counterarguments? How did it influence your reaction?

Note: If a section is missing completely from an article, spend of time discussing how its absence affects the overall success of the argument.

How will you apply a similar approach in your pro-position papers? Based on this assessment, what must you include and what can you avoid in your own argument development?

Follow-Up Post Instructions

Respond to at least two peers or one peer and the instructor. Here, we have an opportunity to compare research notes with our fellow peers.

Did your peers discover something you missed?

Do you agree with the stance in this article? If so, what other warrants or grounds might you add to validate the argument? If not, what qualifiers or rebuttals might you present to disprove the argument?

Remember, the goal here is to find multiple perspectives, but those perspectives should be both professional and respectful. Ask questions to keep the conversation going.

Note: If you see that someone has already received feedback from two peers, please choose to help a peer who has yet to obtain feedback.

Week 3 Discussion

Appealing the Audience

Required Resources

Read/review the following resources for this activity:

Textbook: pp. 66-69

Lesson

Minimum of 1 source (online graphic)

Apply the following writing resources to your posts:

Link (multimedia presentation): Citing References in Text (Links to an external site.)

Link (website): APA Citation and Writing (Links to an external site.)

Initial Post Instructions

Part 1: Research & Review

Search online to find a medical, health facility, or communal-health advertisement. Medical advertisements might include drugs (prescription or over the counter), treatments, or medical devices. You might also find an ad for a local health facility. Alternatively, you can find an ad promoting a communal health topic, like drunk-driving, homelessness, or properly buckling children in car seats. Ideally, you should work within your chosen topic for Week 3 and 4, but if you cannot find an ad about your topic, go with one that sparks your interest.

Part 2: Application

Dissect your chosen ad based on the 4 appeals from this week's lesson: logos, pathos, ethos, and kairos.

Attempt to find an example of each in your ad, and explain how each appeal tries to persuade the audience.

If an appeal is missing, then discuss how its absence affects the ad's overall persuasion.

Finally, present your overall assessment of the ad's effectiveness.

Click on the following Writing Tip link to learn about citing graphics:

Link: Writing Tip

Follow-Up Post Instructions

Respond to at least two peers or one peer and the instructor. Address the following:

Compare your own analysis of the ad's effectiveness to those of your peers.

Who do you think is the potential audience for your peer's ad? Why is that the case?

Evaluate how the ad might be more effective.

Did you find the ad manipulative or supportive?

Who stands to profit from the ad?

Note: If you see that someone has already received feedback from two peers, please choose to help a peer who has yet to obtain feedback.

Langille, J. (2017). Fight or flight...or fix? Employers must work with employees to address workplace stress (Links to an external site.). Canadian Journal of Medical Laboratory Science, 79(4), 26-29.

Part 2: Application

Discuss how credible the source is using the CRAAP evaluation model. Detail as many of the 5 components as possible:

Currency: How up-to-date is the resource? Why is the date of publication important?

Relevance: How significant is the information in the resource to the topic? Is there a direct coalition to the subject matter? Is the source a primary or secondary source? What makes the source appropriate for an academic paper?

Authority: What makes the source credible? What is the publishing body? What are the authors' credentials? Provided info on both.

Accuracy: Was the source peer-reviewed (how do you know?)? Were sources cited in the work? What makes the source reliable?

Purpose: Why was this source created? What is its original intent (inform? persuade? entertain?). Did you notice any particular agenda or bias in the source?

Please use specific examples and cite your sources in APA format. Sometimes, we have to do extra research on the authors or publishing bodies. Those sources should be cited as well.

Follow-Up Post Instructions

Respond to at least two peers or one peer and the instructor. Here, we have an opportunity to compare research notes with our fellow peers. Help your peers by composing a signal phrase based on the source’s credentials.

Example

The signal phrase should include the author (or article title if no author is noted), date of publication, statement of credibility, an interesting verb choice, a cited quote or paraphrase -- all in one complete sentence!

1 Dr. Seuss (2 2013) 3 renown author of numerous and beloved children’s books, 4 queries, 5 “Do you like green eggs and ham?” (p. 8).

Parts of the signal phrase

1

Author (or article title if no author is noted)

2Date of publication

3Statement of credibility

4Interesting verb choice

5Cited quote or paraphrase

Address the following:

What weaknesses do you see, if any, in the source?

If you were to discredit this source is some way, what would be the best approach?

The goal here is not to attack the source, but to test it. When we begin preparing rebuttals later this term, knowing potential points of weakness and predicting what our opposition may question is key. Remember, the goal here is to find multiple perspectives, but those perspectives should be both professional and respectful. Ask questions to keep the conversation going.

Note: If you see that someone has already received feedback from two peers, please choose to help a peer who has yet to obtain feedback.

The paraphrase should be introduced with a signal phrase.

The quote should be introduced and explained.

Both the paraphrase and quote should be cited in-text and on a reference page.

Then, answer the following prompts:

Explain your approach to paraphrasing vs quoting.

What made the quote stand out?

Based on the information from the Turnitin plagiarism link, how did you ensure both the paraphrase and quote were not plagiarized?

How did reviewing the Turnitin plagiarism link impact how you incorporated your resources?

Do you prefer to paraphrase or quote? Why is that the case?

Week 6 Discussion

DQ1 Rebuttals and Refutations

Required Resources

Read/review the following resources for this activity:

Textbook: Chapter 8

Lesson: Week 5, 6

Minimum of 1 new scholarly source

Apply the following writing resources to your posts:

Link (multimedia presentation): Citing References in Text (Links to an external site.)

Link (website): APA Citation and Writing (Links to an external site.)

Initial Post Instructions

Part 1: Research & Review

Review this week's lesson and reading. Find an academic source to back up your opposition's point of view. This is a new source, in addition to the source you located last week.

Part 2: Application

Anticipating readers' objections is one way to determine what other sections to include and support in your paper. Practice writing a counterargument that applies the Toulmin model. Incorporate one of the new sources you have gathered to present your opposition's point. Strive for at least 5 developed sentences. Cite your source in APA format.

Grounds / 1st Counterargument (your opposition's point)

Backing (establish credibility of the source)

Warrant (evidence)

Possible concession / conclusion

Answer the following prompts:

How were you able to remain objective while presenting the opponent's point of view?

What challenges did you face obtaining evidence to back up the assertion?

Which conciliatory approach did you apply and why?

How was it effective?

Follow-Up Post Instructions

Respond to at least two peers or one peer and the instructor. Here, we have an opportunity to compare research notes with our fellow peers. As peers, reply to one another explaining whether or not your classmates are presenting the opposition objectively and provide potential refutations pointers. Give one another ideas or suggestions for points that may be left out or might need to be further developed.

Note: If you see that someone has already received feedback from two peers, please choose to help a peer who has yet to obtain feedback.

DQ2 Deceptive Arguments

Required Resources

Read/review the following resources for this activity:

Textbook: Chapter 6

Lesson

Link (library article): Fear Advertisements: Influencing Consumers to Make Better Health Decisions (Links to an external site.)

Link (library article): Fear Appeals in Social Marketing: The Case of Anti-Speeding Video Advertisement "Mistakes" (Links to an external site.)

Apply the following writing resources to your posts:

Link (multimedia presentation): Citing References in Text (Links to an external site.)

Link (website): APA Citation and Writing (Links to an external site.)

Initial Post Instructions

Part 1: Research & Review

Review the two articles in Required Resources on the uses of logical fallacies and rhetorical appeals in the healthcare field.

The Krishen and Bui (2015) article discusses the active use of logical fallacies to manipulate obese consumers into making better health choices through two oppositional approaches: fear tactics and positive reinforcement.

The Giachino, Stupino, Peratulo, and Bertoldi (2017) article presents a study of fear tactics applied through social advertising, similar to the ads we discussed in our Week 3 discussion boards. Students were exposed to fear advertising in an attempt to reduce high speed driving.

Part 2: Application

Apply what you have learned about logical fallacies and rhetorical appeals to interpret and summarize the articles. Consider the following questions:

If the participants are aware of misleading manipulation techniques, are they immune to their effects?

What are the limitations of these types of fear inducing tactics?

How would you react if you were a subject in one of these studies?

What can we take away from these articles to apply in our own topics?

Where else have you seen these types of fear tactics applied (e.g., advertising, social media, word of mouth, etc.)? Are these other mediums effective? Why is that the case?

Cite your sources in APA format.

Follow-Up Post Instructions

Respond to at least two peers or one peer and the instructor. Offer additional insight into your peers' responses by furthering the discussion. Did you notice any inconstancies in the persuasive methods applied that your peer might have missed? Did you notice any other specific logical fallacies in your peer's response? Have you ever fallen prey to the types of fear tactics commonly used in your classmate's topic? Provide an example if so. If not, how were you able to avoid susceptibility?

Note: If you see that someone has already received feedback from two peers, please choose to help a peer who has yet to obtain feedback.

Apply a formal tone appropriate for academic audiences, maintaining an objective 3rd person point of view - no 1st person (I, me, my, we, our, us, mine) or 2nd person (you, your). Avoid contractions, clichés, and slang terminology.

Use the provided template to assist in formatting the title page and document.

Incorporate at least 3 scholarly sources into the paper. Cite all sources in APA format, both parenthetically and on a reference page.

Before submission, proofread and edit carefully for spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Not every error will be flagged automatically in word-processing programs, and some that are flagged as errors are actually correct.

Question 31For questions 31-35: Review the following body paragraph, and identify the selected components about paragraph construction and source incorporation in the questions below. Each question is worth 3 points:

This problem resulted on the one hand from national concern with global competition. When Sputnik rose into the sky in 1957 and Americans were concerned that Russians were outgunning us in the Space Race, millions of dollars were poured into math and science programs to bolster teaching and resultant learning in these subjects. The 1965 Elementary and Secondary Education Act helped to fund these efforts. Confidence in our educational system was renewed when Americans set foot on the moon in 1969, but by 1983, it had eroded. Its quality so alarmed the government that its 1983 report, A Nation at Risk, warned that a “rising tide of mediocrity” would undermine this country’s place in the competitive 20th century (as cited in Zhao, 2006, p. 28). By 2001, the Bush administration authorized the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, which began in 2002 and runs parallel in thinking and intent to the Race to the Top (RTT) initiative, started under the Obama administration in 2009. NCLB mandated high-stakes tests for all states and imposed a carrots-and-sticks strategy of rewards and punishments if test scores were not consistently high. According to Nichols, Glass, and Berliner (2012), in their in-depth analysis of NAEP data, the thinking is that students and teachers will work and learn more if there are serious rewards or punishments; teachers get financial rewards and schools are lauded by the media if they do well, but teachers face termination, schools face closures, and students are retained or not allowed to graduate if they do poorly. Furthermore, it is thought that tests help produce a world-class education by encouraging students to reach their full potential, improving our collective productivity, and reestablishing our competitiveness on a global scale (Madaus & Russell, 2010).

What is the topic sentence in this body paragraph?

Question 32Which sentence includes a transitional phrase, moving the paragraph to the next topic?

Its quality so alarmed the government that its 1983 report, A Nation at Risk, warned that a “rising tide of mediocrity” would undermine this country’s place in the competitive 20th century.

Furthermore, it is thought that tests help produce a world-class education by encouraging students to reach their full potential, improving our collective productivity, and reestablishing our competitiveness on a global scale.
