Note: The article was pulled from our Chamberlain library's Points of View Reference Center database. This resource is highly recommended, as it presents many of the topics in the General Education Healthcare field that may be applicable this term. To access the resource from our library website, choose Databases A to Z on the homepage. Locate and click on the Points of View database. Scroll down to Health & Medicine. You will see a large list of potential topics ranging from Allergies in Schools to Vegetarianism. When you click on a topic (Vaccines, for example), you will see an overview of the topic, as well as points, counterpoints, and a guide to critical analysis.
For your initial post, develop your ideas about a selected topic by conducting an online search to find a recent pro article about your topic. The goal is to find an article that takes a clear pro position. Include the following in your post:

The article can be an online source from credible websites or an academic resource from the Chamberlain Library. It must be cited in APA format. For pointers on APA citations, please refer to the Chamberlain Library’s Citation and Writing Assistance website (noted in the Required Resources).

Evaluate how effective the article's argument was using Toulmin's model. Detail as many of the 6 components as possible:
Claim: What was the article's main point? What's the thesis?
Grounds: What kinds of evidence did the author use to support his/her argument? Provide an example.
Warrants: Did the author(s) successfully connect the evidence to the main point? How so?
Backing: How credible were the sources the author(s) applied? How does credulity affect your overall response?
Qualifiers: Did you notice any absolutes (all, every, each) or limiters (some, several, many)? How did they add or subtract from the argument?
Rebuttal: Did the author(s) present any points of opposition and counterarguments? How did it influence your reaction?
Note: If a section is missing completely from an article, spend of time discussing how its absence affects the overall success of the argument.

Part 1: Research & Review
Search online to find a medical, health facility, or communal-health advertisement. Medical advertisements might include drugs (prescription or over the counter), treatments, or medical devices. You might also find an ad for a local health facility. Alternatively, you can find an ad promoting a communal health topic, like drunk-driving, homelessness, or properly buckling children in car seats. Ideally, you should work within your chosen topic for Week 3 and 4, but if you cannot find an ad about your topic, go with one that sparks your interest.
Part 2: Application
Dissect your chosen ad based on the 4 appeals from this week's lesson: logos, pathos, ethos, and kairos.
Attempt to find an example of each in your ad, and explain how each appeal tries to persuade the audience.
If an appeal is missing, then discuss how its absence affects the ad's overall persuasion.
Finally, present your overall assessment of the ad's effectiveness.

Discuss how credible the source is using the CRAAP evaluation model. Detail as many of the 5 components as possible:
Currency: How up-to-date is the resource? Why is the date of publication important?
Relevance: How significant is the information in the resource to the topic? Is there a direct coalition to the subject matter? Is the source a primary or secondary source? What makes the source appropriate for an academic paper?
Authority: What makes the source credible? What is the publishing body? What are the authors' credentials? Provided info on both.
Accuracy: Was the source peer-reviewed (how do you know?)? Were sources cited in the work? What makes the source reliable?
Purpose: Why was this source created? What is its original intent (inform? persuade? entertain?). Did you notice any particular agenda or bias in the source?
Please use specific examples and cite your sources in APA format. Sometimes, we have to do extra research on the authors or publishing bodies. Those sources should be cited as well.

Example

Review the two articles in Required Resources on the uses of logical fallacies and rhetorical appeals in the healthcare field.
The Krishen and Bui (2015) article discusses the active use of logical fallacies to manipulate obese consumers into making better health choices through two oppositional approaches: fear tactics and positive reinforcement.
The Giachino, Stupino, Peratulo, and Bertoldi (2017) article presents a study of fear tactics applied through social advertising, similar to the ads we discussed in our Week 3 discussion boards. Students were exposed to fear advertising in an attempt to reduce high speed driving.
Part 2: Application
Apply what you have learned about logical fallacies and rhetorical appeals to interpret and summarize the articles. Consider the following questions:
If the participants are aware of misleading manipulation techniques, are they immune to their effects?
What are the limitations of these types of fear inducing tactics?
How would you react if you were a subject in one of these studies?
What can we take away from these articles to apply in our own topics?
Where else have you seen these types of fear tactics applied (e.g., advertising, social media, word of mouth, etc.)? Are these other mediums effective? Why is that the case?

For this assignment, complete the following:
Review the Toulmin-model outline (Week 2 Lesson) and your completed Week 1 Assignment (Pro-Position Proposal). Assess any feedback provided by the professor and/or your peers.
Compose a position paper representing the pro side of your topic. (See the Pro-Paper Template). The paper should include approximately 6 developed paragraphs:

Apply a formal tone appropriate for academic audiences, maintaining an objective 3rd person point of view - no 1st person (I, me, my, we, our, us, mine) or 2nd person (you, your). Avoid contractions, clichés, and slang terminology.
