Millions of people worldwide are living their lives with dysfunctional kidneys, many of which must undergo routine dialysis in order to survive. Dialysis, although life-saving, is expensive, inconvenient, and time-consuming. And many patients would do nearly anything in order to lead a “normal” life again. Unfortunately, this has opened up an industry, which specializes in the illegal trafficking of human organs. Although Iran is the only country in which the sale of human organs is legal, many other countries do not readily enforce laws against this practice, which allows those with the means to do so to “buy” an organ for transplant. As a result, the burden of birth control rests primarily on the woman’s shoulders. Despite the increased cost and risk, six times more women have tubal ligations than men have vasectomies. One international response has been World Vasectomy Day (includes video, 3:29). This is a yearly initiative by health activists around the world to help dispel myths about this male sterilization procedure. Doctors participating in the event aim to perform as many vasectomies as possible, in 250 countries around the world, in 24 hours. Despite the vasectomy being a fairly non-invasive procedure, many men refuse to have it.
