Write 5 pages (no more than 1500 words) pr a 5-10 minute podcast/video that answers one of the following questions. If doing podcast option, you can work in groups of one, two, or three --all students must be enrolled in this class and all will receive the same grade. High production values expected.

1. Under what circumstances (if any) is the targeted killing of a foreign national justified? In answering this question, you should make clear whether you are using the term justified in a prudential, legal, or moral sense of the term. Whatever sense of the term you use, you need to justify why your chosen sense of the term is the appropriate one. 2. To what extent was the war between Athens and Sparta caused (as Thucydides himself appears to believe) by “the rise of Athenian power.” Why (if at all) does is this so-called “third level explanation” more important than other such factors, including the quality of Athenian leadership, the nature of Athens as an imperial power, and the more general Hellenic warrior culture?

3. Write a critical review of one of the following articles/books:

4. “Sovereignty” (or "Westphalian Sovereignty") gives the state a bunch of “superpowers.” Which of these superpowers are necessary and desirable; and which are unnecessary and undesirable?

5. Hobbes and Kant both base their political theory on the state of nature. Both argue that we ought to leave the state of nature and establish a state or commonwealth [or public right]. But they offer different explanations of why we ought to leave the state of nature; and they reach different conclusions both about the nature of the commonwealth and the importance of a form of political authority beyond the commonwealth. Who is right? Or which of the two gets nearer to the political truth?

6. What is imperialism? And which of its various forms is wrong?

7. Prime Minister Orban argues that liberal democracy is a form of imperialism—moral imperialism. Is he right?

What is moral relativism? What are its implications for international relations?

Remember the five rules of writing a five-page paper/podcast: Include in the opening paragraph the sentence “This paper argues that…. [thesis].

” You need at least two or three arguments in support of your thesis. You need at least one argument against your thesis, which you rebut/knock-out. Your arguments for your thesis must be stronger than your arguments against your thesis. Your classmates are your audience. Pitch it at that level.
