Week 1 Discussion
Area of Interest in NP
Discussion Criteria
Application of Course Knowledge: The student's initial post contributes unique perspectives or insights gleaned from personal experience or examples from the healthcare field. The student must accurately and fully discuss the topic for the week in addition to providing personal or professional examples. The student must completely answer the entire initial question. Initial post must be posted by Wednesday at 11:59pm MT. Two resources must be used in your initial post. One from the weekly reading or lesson and one outside source.
Engagement in Meaningful Dialogue: The student responds to a student peer and course faculty to further dialogue.
Peer Response: The student responds substantively to at least one topic-related post by a student peer. A substantive post adds content or insights or asks a question that will add to the learning experience and/or generate discussion.
A post of "I agree" with a repeat of the other student's post does not count as a substantive post. A collection of shallow posts does not equal a substantive post.
The peer response must occur on a separate day from the initial posting.
The peer response must occur before Sunday, 11:59 p.m. MT.
Integration of Evidence: The student post provides support from a minimum of one scholarly in-text citation with a matching reference AND assigned readings OR online lessons, per discussion topic per week. Two resources total and to count must be an in-text citation in your initial post.
What is a scholarly resource? A scholarly resource is one that comes from a professional, peer-reviewed publication (e.g., journals and government reports such as those from the FDA or CDC).
Contains references for sources cited
Written by a professional or scholar in the field and indicates credentials of the author(s)
Is no more than 5 years old for clinical or research article
What is not considered a scholarly resource?
Newspaper articles and layperson literature (e.g., Readers Digest, Healthy Life Magazine, Food, and Fitness)
Information from Wikipedia or any wiki
Textbooks
Website homepages
The weekly lesson
Articles in healthcare and nursing-oriented trade magazines, such as Nursing Made Incredibly Easy and RNMagazine (Source: What is a scholarly article.docx; Created 06/09 CK/CL Revised: 02/17/11, 09/02/11 nlh/clm)
Can the lesson for the week be used as a scholarly source?
Information from the weekly lesson can be cited in a posting; however, it is not to be the sole source used in the post.
Are resources provided from CU acceptable sources (e.g., the readings for the week)?
Not as a sole source within the post. The textbook and/or assigned (required) articles for the week can be used, but another outside source must be cited for full credit. Textbooks are not considered scholarly sources for the purpose of discussions.
Are websites acceptable as scholarly resources for discussions?
Yes, if they are documents or data cited from credible websites. Credible websites usually end in .gov or .edu; however, some .org sites that belong to professional associations (e.g., American Heart Association, National League for Nursing, American Diabetes Association) are also considered credible websites. Websites ending with .com are not to be used as scholarly resources
Professionalism in Communication: The post presents information in logical, meaningful, and understandable sequence, and is clearly relevant to the discussion topic. Grammar, spelling, and/or punctuation are accurate.
Wednesday Participation Requirement: The student provides a substantive response to the graded discussion question(s) or topic(s), posted by the course faculty (not a response to a peer), by Wednesday, 11:59 p.m. MT of each week.
Total Participation Requirement: The student provides at least three substantive posts (one to the initial question or topic, one to a student peer, and one to a faculty question) on two different days during the week.

CO4: Develop knowledge related to research and evidence-based practice as a basis for designing and critiquing research studies. (PO 1, 5)
CO5: Analyze research findings and evidence-based practice to advance holistic care initiatives that promote positive healthcare outcomes. (PO 1, 2, 5)
Requirements:
Initial post: Create a Kaltura video presentation based on the PowerPoint slideshow you submitted in week 7. The slides you created should be displayed on your screen in the recorded presentation; Use of the Kaltura camera feature is optional. A clear audio presentation of the content should be included. While the presentation is due Wednesday, please consider posting the presentation to the discussion area early in the week to facilitate a robust discussion.
Kaltura Resources: Use the Kaltura resources found under the Resources tab in the course. If you have difficulty using Kaltura Capture Space, reach out to IT first (please obtain a ticket number). If you are still unable to record using Kaltura, reach out to your instructor for alternate recording options.
Participating in the Discussion: View and provide feedback on a minimum of 2 peer presentations. You may address some of the following questions in your responses:
Is the PICOT question original, relevant, and interesting?
Is the presentation clear and easy to follow?
Did the presentation provide sufficient evidence to support the presenter’s recommendations?
Are references accurate, adequate, and balanced?
Does the presentation add to nursing knowledge?
What applications do you see for the content of this presentation to your practice as an NP?
Your peer posts should add to the dialogue or ask questions about the presentation.

Week 2 Assignment
PICOT Question Worksheet
Purpose
Evidence-based practice is initiated by nurses and other healthcare professionals who identify questions about specific health-related interventions and the outcomes of those interventions on individuals and populations. The creation of a PICOT question helps guide evidence-based initiatives. The purpose of this worksheet is to provide an opportunity to explore the development of a PICOT question as a foundation for evidence-based practice.
Activity Learning Outcomes
Through this assignment, the student will demonstrate the ability to:
CO1: Integrate evidence-based practice and research to support advancement of holistic nursing care in diverse healthcare settings. (PO 1, 4)
CO2: Integrate knowledge related to evidence-based practice and person-centered care to improve healthcare outcomes. (PO 1, 2)
CO3: Demonstrate professional and personal growth through a spirit of inquiry, scholarship, and service in diverse healthcare settings. (PO 3, 4)
CO4: Develop knowledge related to research and evidence-based practice as a basis for designing and critiquing research studies. (PO 1, 2, 5)
Requirements:

Respond to the questions below using the PICOT Question Worksheet Template Download PICOT Question Worksheet Template.
Using a minimum of 3 scholarly nursing sources, current within 5 years:
Identify and describe one practice-related issue or concern. You may choose to build on the practice issue you identified in NR500NP/NR501NP.
Explain why the issue/concern is important to nurse practitioner practice and its impact on health outcomes.
Describe each element of your PICOT question in one or two sentences, being sure to address all of the following:
P-Population and problem– What is the nursing practice concern or problem and whom does it affect?
I–Intervention– What evidence-based solution for the problem would you like to apply?
C–Comparison– What is another solution for the problem? Note that this is typically the current practice, no intervention at all, or alternative solutions.
O–Outcome– Very specifically, how will you know that the intervention worked? Think about how you will measure the outcome.
T–Time frame– What is the Timeframe involved for the EBP initiative or the target date of completion?
Construct your PICOT question in the standard PICOT question format (narrative) and define each letter separately, such as:
P =
I =
C =
O =
T =
