NRS 701 ADVANCED PATHOLOGY EPIGENETICS PAPER

INSTRUCTIONS

Each student will research a patient condition of their choice from the list in the Epigenetics Case Study Wiki and submit at least a 4-page paper. You will sign-up for the condition of your choice, using the Wiki page in Blackboard. Please be sure to use proper APA formatting guidelines, which include, but are not limited to a title page, page numbers, in-text citations, and a reference page. Remember- information you locate should be from an evidenced-based, peerreviewed source, and your text. It is of utmost importance that you appropriately cite the resources being used for any facts and ideas that are not your own. If you have any questions about this, please let me know! Here are the items you will be discussing in your paper:

1. Title: Label the title the condition being studied.

2. On a cellular level, describe the epigenetics of the disease. Please be sure to thoroughly discuss the genes and chromosomes affected and provide detail regarding how they are affected.

3. In detail, describe the role a family member (i.e., mom, dad, brother, sister, aunts, uncles, and/or grandparents) play in the development of the disease. Remember, you are considering this role through an epigenetics lens. How many generations do you need to consider for the specific disease? Please include a sample Punnett square AND family pedigree to display how the disease affects the individual and family members.

 4. Describe the affect an individual's past medical history has (including environmental factors) and how it impacts development of this disease.

5. Describe how someone's social determinants of health impact the specific disease. You may utilize this CDC website to better understand what SDOH are and get an idea of how they affect risk of disease and overall health outcomes. https://www.cdc.gov/socialdeterminants/

6. In your paper, include dialogue with a patient who presents to your clinic with the disease you have identified. He/she wishes to have children. Free from medical jargon, how would you describe the epigenetics of the disease to the patient - relative to his/her wish to procreate? (Keep in mind, it is important to describe in a simplified manner to your patient).

7. Create and include a 1-page handout that could be given to a patient to illustrate the epigenetics of the disease and how it may manifest in children or adults. Please be sure to cite diagrams or pictures you may find from another source. You may also create on your own picture or diagram which will not require a citation
