Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to increase your knowledge of health psychology concepts beyond the textbook. It also designed to utilize your critical thinking skills.

Please read one of the non-fiction books listed below. If you have another book in mind it must be approved in advance. Reviews of non-approved books will not be accepted.

When you submit your assignment, you should identify the option number and description you chose; failure to do so will result in a deduction of 10 points. 

   •    Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers by Robert Sapolsky

   •    Dreamland: Adventures in the Strange Science of Sleep by David Randall

   •    Opening Up: The Healing Power of Expressing Emotions by James Pennebaker

   •    Healing and the Mind by Bill Moyers

   •    Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think by Brian Wansink

After reading the entire book, please write a 3- 6-page analysis that includes a detailed summary and a critical analysis of the ideas, concepts, and/or experiences presented.  Evaluate the book using the following guidelines:

   1    Provide a brief overview of the book (approximately one page).  Please be sure to include the title, author, type of book (e.g. fiction/non-fiction) and any other relevant description (e.g. biography/autobiography).  You might also include relevant information about the author, and/or why you chose this particular book.

   2    Discuss your general impression of the book.  What two or three points do you consider most/least important or interesting?  

   3    Evaluate the accuracy of the information presented.  Explain how it compares to information presented in class or in the text.   Were there any questions that you think still need to be answered?

   4    Explain why you would or would not recommend this book to someone trying to understand the topic presented.
