NU629 Health Promotion Disease Prevention
Week 3 Assignment
Levels of Prevention and Preventive Services Guidelines
Overview
This course focuses on healthy living and preventive screenings to help promote health and prevent disease and illness. The following is a list of screenings that will be explored throughout the course: cervical cancer (CA), breast CA, colorectal CA, testicular CA, prostate CA, suicide, hypertension, sexually transmitted illnesses, human papillomavirus, intimate partner violence, smoking/vaping, depression, hepatitis C, hepatitis B, fall prevention, lung CA, cardiovascular disorders, childhood and adult immunizations. Many organizations promote their own guidelines. One particular agency that promotes such guidelines is the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), along with the NIH, CDC, ACOG, AFP, ACC, JNCC, and others. It is recommended that you utilize the guidelines from the USPSTF and supplement with the other guidelines as you prepare for your work in this course.
For this assignment, utilize the NU629 Week 3 Prevention and Guidelines Excel Template (Excel). To complete the table, list an example of each type of prevention as it relates to the health concern listed. Note: When providing an example of a type of prevention, you need to be specific when applicable (for example, for breast cancer, you might list “mammogram” as a preventive measure, but you should also list the recommended ages for this screening tool, etc.). You must cite your work as applicable (for example, if you come up with your own primordial prevention idea, this would not require a citation).
Remember that during Week 1 there is an interactive experience in the Learning Materials that can help you with this assignment if you should have any questions. This is also a great place to make notes related to specific preventive guidelines - use this as a study tool for the final exam.
Please refer to the Grading Rubric for details on how this activity will be graded. Note that specific/additional instructions within Moodle may not be precisely outlined within the rubric but are required.

Week 10 Assignment
Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Population-Specific
Overview
During this assignment, you will be asked to discuss the concepts of health promotion and disease prevention, relating this information to the role of the APRN and applying it to the vulnerable population you selected during Week 1. In Week 6, you submitted a rough draft of your paper and received feedback from faculty, so please make sure you incorporate those comments along with direction you received from SmartThinking, Pearson Writing Center, and the Library.
Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Population-Specific Paper
This paper was to be developed throughout the first six to nine weeks of the course, with an opportunity to submit a rough draft for feedback during Week 6 and your final submission due this week, in Week 10. The goal of this assignment is twofold: 1) for you to demonstrate an understanding of the key concepts of health promotion and disease prevention as related to the role of the APRN while applying this information to a specific vulnerable population; and 2) for you to have an opportunity to develop your writing and APA formatting skills through faculty feedback and the utilization of various tools here at Regis (that is, Regis Library and staff, SmartThinking, Pearson Writing Center, etc.).
The faculty at Regis want you to be successful. Being able to present not only your thoughts but evidence-based practice information in a concise, systematic, and clear manner will be a talent that serves you well.
Note: You must submit a SmartThinking report from Week 9 or 10 with your paper. The suggested APA / grammatical ions must be made along with the faculty-suggested ions from Week 6. If this is not done, you will automatically receive a zero. Do not wait to submit your work to SmartThinking, as they will be backed up, so submit early (that is, the end of Week 8/first part of Week 9).
This entire paper is about your vulnerable population, so each topic listed in the paper needs to be related to your chosen population; from the introduction to the conclusion, it is about your chosen group.
The paper is to be five to eight pages in length, not including the title page, attachments, and reference pages. Note: Points will be deducted for going over the max of 8 pages (5 points for each page).
The paper will be divided into four sections.

Week 2 Journal
Palliative and Hospice Care: An Approach to Health Promotion
In this course, we consider vulnerable populations and Health Promotion and Disease Prevention standards. We look at content through the lens of pediatrics, women’s health, adults, mental health, and the elderly. Having just completed exercises related to the five levels of prevention in Week 1, consider what you have learned and how to apply Quaternary Prevention. Watch the following video and write a one-page journal submission regarding your thoughts about the use of palliative and hospice care as an option for health promotion. In your journal submission, you must demonstrate an understanding of each, palliative and hospice care, as they are not the same. In what scenario(s) might this be applicable? Have you ever thought about palliative and hospice care promoting health? Why or why not?

Week 8 Journal
Self-Reflection, Spending, Saving, and Life Habits – One Paycheck? Two, Three . . . Ten?
No matter how much you earn, “getting by'' is still a struggle for most people these days. Seventy-eight percent of full-time workers indicated that they live paycheck to paycheck, which is up from 75 percent for the previous year, according to a report from CareerBuilder (August 24, 2017). Most of us make New Year's resolutions, and budgeting or staying on budget is frequently in the top three. According to Statistia.com, after reviewing more than 22,500 sources, the top three New Year's resolutions for 2018 tied at 37 percent each – eat healthier, get more exercise, and save more money. At the same time, 32 percent of those polled did not intend to make a New Year’s Resolution.
When thinking about the mindset of Americans, their New Year's resolutions, and the state of our health, as Advanced Practice Nurses, we need to understand that we are dealing with more than the “health” or “disease” of our patients, but also cultural mores and financial constraints. The studies may recommend a certain course of treatment, but when most of us are “one paycheck away” from disaster, the study recommendations do not take into account who’s going to keep the lights on or food on the table.
Reflect on the learning material for this week, other people you may know, and your own personal situation in relation to money. Consider how an individual’s financial well-being directly affects their overall health and their ability to receive preventative services and evidence-based care.

Week 12 Journal
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), Racial Disparity, and Privilege
In reading your assigned textbook chapters and select articles, and reviewing the CDC website link on IPV found within the Learning Material section of this module, you will have looked at both ends of the spectrum—from disparity to privilege—and at triggers, which are not bound by any social class, leading to intimate partner violence. Consider the following:
Does trauma-informed care apply to IPV? Why or why not?
Review the maternal and infant mortality statistics within our country and your state. Do you note any disparity?
How can “privilege” become a beacon for change?
Intimate partner violence expresses a need for power and control by many methods. Would you recognize them all?
Is there a path that most violent individuals follow?
Reflect on the content presented and submit a one- to two-page journal (this does not include the title or reference pages) providing an example of how you have been witness to IPV, disparity, and or privilege and outline how you, as an APRN, can recognize and reduce violence and health disparity in women.

Week 14 Journal
Is Your State’s Healthcare Policy Making You Sick?
Overview: After you have read Chapters 28, 32, and 33 in your De Chesnay text, consider the healthcare policies within your state. What health-related stories are in the news? Are there any “upstream” concerns in your community? How do you believe that a doctorally prepared APRN could positively affect the overall health of the citizens in your state?
Write a one-to two-page journal submission about your thoughts to the questions that have been posed. Provide references to validate the healthcare policy and your concerns.
