Module 1 Case

TECHNOLOGY, INNOVATION, AND CREATIVITY

Assignment Overview

In the readings for this module, you will find both discussions of the social processes of technological and social innovation as well as suggestions about where technologies may be going. Obviously, we can only touch on a few of the creative and innovative developments taking place around us. This assignment calls for you to further investigate specific kinds of innovations that are currently under development, and think about how they will affect both using and non-using organizations and society generally down the road.

You can start with the background reading for suggestions about technologies to research, but you should also plan on doing searches using terms such as “emerging new creative technologies” or variants on that theme to identify new things you may not necessarily be aware of. Spread your search net broadly, and you will find a variety of interesting new developments to discuss.

Case Assignment

Prepare a 5- to 7-page paper in accordance with the following Assignment Expectations, on the topic:

“Emerging new creative technologies and what they will require organizations to do differently.”

Discuss at least three specific new technological developments that you know about personally or can research using the Internet. Describe them in some detail and provide references to them. Think about what they will require of their users that is not being done now, and how organizations might have to change to incorporate them. Estimate their long-term effects and what further developments they might stimulate. Conclude with a couple of paragraphs summarizing your conclusions across all the cases you have discussed.

Case Assignment Expectations

Length: The written component of this assignment should be 5-7 pages long (double-spaced) without counting the cover page and reference page.

Organization: Subheadings should be used to organize your paper according to the questions.

Grammar and Spelling: While no points are deducted for minor errors, assignments are expected to adhere to standard guidelines of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence syntax. Points may be deducted if grammar and spelling impact clarity. We encourage you to use tools such as grammarly.com and proofread your paper before submission.

When you write your paper, make sure you do the following:

Answer the assignment questions directly.

Stay focused on the precise assignment questions. Do not go off on tangents or devote a lot of space to summarizing general background materials.

Use evidence from your readings to justify your conclusions.

Cite at least five credible resources.

Reference your sources of information with both a bibliography and in-text citations. See the Student Guide to Writing a High-Quality Academic Paper, including pages 11-14 on in-text citations. Another resource is the “Writing Style Guide,” which is found under “My Resources” in the TLC Portal.

Your assignment will be graded using the following criteria:

Assignment-driven Criteria: Student demonstrates mastery covering all key elements of the assignment.

Critical Thinking/Application to Professional Practice: Student demonstrates mastery conceptualizing the problem, and analyzing information. Conclusions are logically presented and applied to professional practice in an exceptional manner.

Business Writing and Quality of References: Student demonstrates mastery and proficiency in written communication and use of appropriate and relevant literature at the doctoral level.

Module 1 SLP

TECHNOLOGY, INNOVATION, AND CREATIVITY

The overall aim of the Session Long Project assignments in this course is to facilitate the further development of your DBA project, by developing the core of the literature review for your draft project. This will entail developing a structure for the material to be reviewed, identifying and accessing different kinds of source material, and organizing the material to support the aims of the project. At the end of this course, you are expected to have a working draft of chapter 2 of your DBA project that you can take into the next course, in which you develop a research methodology for the project.

It is important to stress that what you are developing here is only a draft. You are not bound by what you develop in this series of assignments; everything is subject to modification and improvement as you move toward the project itself. But it is important to take these assignments seriously, since they build toward a usable chapter. The more work you are able to put into your project during this course, the less you will be playing catch-up later on in the program, and the easier it will be to complete your project and obtain your degree.

During Module 1, you are expected to take the introduction to your project that you developed in your previous course, and annotate it to identify key areas in which literature will need to be searched and the other kinds of background information that you will need to develop in order to support your project.

Specifically, you are to:

Review your draft introduction that you developed previously. Using a copy of this introduction, develop an annotation for each paragraph in your introduction in which you identify various kinds of source material that might back up and justify the points made in the paragraph. Try to be as complete as you can. At this point, you do not need to describe specific sources; just the general kind of material you would like to search out in order to support your arguments.

It is possible that some paragraphs may not actually call for sources, if they are merely bridging text or are filler. In this case, you may simply note that this is a filler paragraph. There should not be very many of these if your draft is well prepared.

You may choose to use the “review” function in Microsoft Word to present your annotations, or you may choose some other form. In any event, be sure that your annotations are clearly set off from your draft introduction by making them in a different color from the original text. Here is an example taken from a proposal, showing the kinds of annotations that this assignment seeks from you:

When you have completed annotating each paragraph in your introduction, submit the annotated draft as your project assignment for this module.

SLP Assignment Expectations

Length: The written component of this assignment should be a copy of your draft introduction, however long that might be, with the required annotations either in the margin or in the text.

You may take the opportunity to revise and improve your introduction as you proceed.

As you complete your assignment, make sure you do the following:

Answer the assignment questions directly.

Stay focused on the precise assignment questions. Do not go off on tangents or devote a lot of space to summarizing general background materials.

Citing Sources: Student demonstrates mastery applying APA formatting standards to both in text citations and the reference list.

Professionalism and Timeliness: Assignments are submitted on time.

Module 2 Case

PROCESS INNOVATION

Assignment Overview

In this assignment, you will identify and apply BPR principles to problems within an organization that is familiar to you. This may require you to do further research into the sources of the problems you identify, and potential solutions that have been posed for them. You may also wish to research online case studies of BPR applications as a guide toward identifying the kind of analysis you need to provide.

Case Assignment

Prepare a 5- to 7-page paper in accordance with the following Assignment Expectations, on the topic:

“Lessons that could be learned by applying BPR principles to my organization”

Start by summarizing the core principles of business process reengineering, as you understand them from your reading and other research. Then identify one or more key process problems that are currently being faced by an organization. Choose an organization you are either a member of, or some other organization whose operations you are significantly familiar with. This need not be a manufacturing organization; the same principles apply to service organizations, nonprofits, and even government agencies. If you cannot find a couple of key process problems, then you are not looking very hard. Briefly describe these problems and their effects on the organization, as well as their place within the organizational structure and hierarchy. Then, drawing on your statement of principles, identify how you think BPR might be usefully applied to the problems you describe, and what you expect some of the results might be. Finally, identify what you see as the major barriers or sources of resistance to attempting a BPR-type solution to your problems. Finish with a summary paragraph in which you assess the overall utility of BPR, in light of the case that you have just described.

Assignment Expectations

Length: The written component of this assignment should be 5-7 pages long (double-spaced) without counting the cover page and reference page.

Organization: Subheadings should be used to organize your paper according to the questions.

Module 2 SLP

PROCESS INNOVATION

During Module 2, your project assignment is to develop a strategy for searching out key sources within the literature that will meet the needs you identified in your Module 1 SLP. By “strategy,” we mean a list of steps that you will take to identify the sources that you need. These sources may include professional writing such as journal articles or conference presentations, technical reports or other sources of technical data, analyses and opinions presented by knowledgeable experts regarding your problem, or any other kinds of information that you identified a need for in module 1. Hopefully, you will be able to identify a way of gathering information about everything that you identified as a need earlier.

Specifically, you are to prepare a short paper describing your information sources and the steps you will undertake to obtain what information you need. This might involve library research, consultation with other experts, online searching using a variety of tools, or other mechanisms. For each kind of information you seek, you should present here a set of steps by which you can obtain it and incorporated into your project.

This strategy description should be accompanied by two or three specific sources that you have been able to obtain thus far. These might be copies of journal articles or other sources. The point is to show that your strategy has at least begun to pay off in terms of providing the kind of source material you will need to develop your literature review overall.

SLP Assignment Expectations

Length: The written component of this assignment should be 3-4 pages long (double-spaced) without counting the cover page and reference page.

Organization: Subheadings should be used to organize your paper according to the questions.

Module 3 Case

PRODUCT INNOVATION

Assignment Overview

In the case for this module, you will be investigating the development, marketing, and use of the iPhone as an example of product innovation. In the readings, you will find several descriptions of the overall product innovation process, as well as some of the history of the iPhone. You are encouraged to seek out other sources of information on this topic as well.

Case Assignment

Prepare a 5- to 7-page paper in accordance with the following Assignment Expectations on the topic:

“What we can and can’t learn about product innovation from the experience of the iPhone”

In this paper, you should use the experiences of the iPhone as illustrations of your general points, but your focus should be on product innovation in general rather than on the iPhone alone. What about the iPhone experience has been typical of major new product innovations? What about this experience has been different from what might’ve been expected? What lessons can other product innovators learn by examining the iPhone experience? Are there any lessons that they might be tempted to learn from the iPhone that would be false and/or misleading? Please conclude with a couple of paragraphs summarizing the current general state of understanding of the product innovation process and how it can be potentially improved.

Module 3 SLP

PRODUCT INNOVATION

During Module 3, you will proceed to implement your source-gathering strategy by collecting or at least examining and recording the key sources that you will be citing in your literature review. It is expected that you may need to modify your strategy in some ways, if you are having difficulty obtaining the kind of information you seek. During this module, you want to assemble the bulk of the material you put into your literature review. You will also begin to develop paragraphs for the review as you read and review your sources and fit them into the proposed structure of your review.

As your SLP submission for this module, you are to prepare a short paper describing your success or lack thereof in obtaining materials that you need and your success or lack thereof in finding within the sources the support material you need for your draft (quotations, etc.) You need to include at least one sample paragraph from your literature review draft that you are assembling, in which you use sources for the purpose of reviewing literature. The aim of this part of the submission is to show that you can in fact construct a suitable literature review paragraph based around your sources.

You should also include any additional information about the progress of your project overall, including difficulties that you might be facing, changes that might need to be made in your draft, and any help that you might need from your instructor as you move toward a complete draft of the literature review.

Module 4 Case

DISRUPTIVE INNOVATION

Assignment Overview

As a focal example for this module, we will consider the case of a disruptive innovation that is roaring down on society at nearly the speed of light, despite common acknowledgment that we really do not know what its effects will be. This is so-called “automated driving” or “driverless vehicles.” There is no question that within the next 5 to 10 years, the bulk of vehicles on the roads will switch from being directly human controlled to being largely robotically controlled, with only sporadic if any human intervention. For all of human history, transportation has required the direct involvement of a human being, whether that be the driver of an oxcart or the driver of a Mercedes 18-wheeler. Management of vehicles has been one of the central preoccupations of humans for at least the last 100 years. Giant industries are based on this technological framework. The introduction of robotically controlled vehicles promises to disrupt these giant industries in critical ways, even eliminating some of them entirely and reshaping others to be almost unrecognizable.

How will society deal with these issues? What will survive this disruptive transition, and what will not? What will our society look like when it is completely transformed by this virtually inevitable technology? Who will the winners and losers be? Any look at disruptive innovation always generates more questions than answers, but by examining those questions we may begin to formulate better ones and eventually arrive at a more complete understanding. If we do not, then we will be simply whipsawed by our own technologies whose underlying values may be significantly different from those we would like to see our society enact.

Case Assignment

After reading the required background material and finding at least two other resources on your own, write a 5- to 7-page paper discussing the topic:

“Self-driving vehicles as a disruptive technology”

You should begin your paper by summarizing what is currently known about disruptive innovations and their effects. Then provide a brief description of the self-driving vehicle technology and where it currently stands today. You should then proceed to address the questions posed in the case discussion above: namely, how will society deal with these issues? What will survive this disruptive transition, and what will not? What will our society look like when it is completely transformed by this virtually inevitable technology? Who will the winners and losers be? Conclude your paper with a couple of paragraphs summarizing your views on self-driving vehicles in particular, and how society and organizations might to deal more effectively and productively with disruptive technologies generally.

Assignment Expectations

Length: The written component of this assignment should be 5-7 pages long (double-spaced) without counting the cover page and reference page.

Organization: Subheadings should be used to organize your paper according to the questions.

Module 4 SLP

DISRUPTIVE INNOVATION

During Module 4, your SLP assignment is to develop an annotated outline for chapter 2 - the literature review - of your project draft. This will consist of the headings in the chapter, and a brief description of each paragraph under each heading. This description should include the sources you plan to be using in that paragraph, as well as notes on any further material that you have not yet been able to obtain. It may be that some paragraphs in your outline will not draw on any particular sources; that is okay, as long as you explain the purpose of the paragraph in the context of the chapter as a whole. It may also be the case that you still do not have some sources necessary to describe how they will fit into the review. That is okay as well, as long as you note where you are missing information and present some ideas about how you are going to get it during the next couple of weeks. The aim is to present a full outline of your literature review, prior to actually writing all the paragraphs to be included in the draft.

It may be that you have already prepared some paragraphs to be included during previous parts of this project assignment. If so, those should be included in your outline.

Module 5 Case

IMPLEMENTATION OF CHANGE

Assignment Overview

As our focal technology for this module, we will consider the evolution of corporate wellness programs. The technologies associated with promotion of “corporate wellness” (in itself a concept that has many different definitions and varieties) are generally fairly broad in range and capable of being introduced into practice in many different ways. It is certainly desirable to have technologies that can be adapted effectively to particular organizational situations during their implementation; but if there are certain elements of the technology that will only be effective if they are implemented in a particular kind of way, then a flexible orientation can easily introduce enough error into the process that the positive effects of the technology are not realized.

It is extremely difficult to separate failures in implementation from failures in the technology itself. Moreover, since implementation problems tend to become fairly contentious issues in organizational politics, there are likely to be wider repercussions felt throughout the system. Organizational life is further complicated when one attempts to separate bad decisions from those made about negative things, or separate bad decisions from the good in a complex situation where a number of people in several places are making decisions simultaneously.

Our case here involves looking at corporate wellness interventions as examples of technologies where implementation is absolutely critical, and how you get to a new equilibrium is as important, if not more important, than the content of the equilibrium itself. We will consider these issues both from an implementation (bottom-up) perspective as well as from a strategic (top-down) perspective, and try to see how these two perspectives hopefully complement each, other but can easily wind up in conflict.

Case Assignment

Prepare a 5- to 7-page paper in accordance with the following Assignment Expectations on the topic:

“Strategy and implementation of corporate wellness programs”

You should begin your paper by reviewing the general idea of corporate wellness and the knowledge base underlying its popularity and value. You should then assess how companies make strategic decisions about putting such programs in the place, and how that strategy is then translated into an effective or ineffective implementation process. Discuss how, during implementation, programs are shaped in different kinds of ways, some better than others. You should include your paper with a couple of paragraphs outlining your own recommendations on how companies can more effectively integrate overall innovative strategies with local change management, under conditions of uncertainty and risk.

Assignment Expectations

Length: The written component of this assignment should be 5-7 pages long (double-spaced) without counting the cover page and reference page.

Organization: Subheadings should be used to organize your paper according to the questions.

When you write your paper make sure you do the following:

Answer the assignment questions directly.

Stay focused on the precise assignment questions. Do not go off on tangents or devote a lot of space to summarizing general background materials.

Use evidence from your readings to justify your conclusions.

Cite at least five credible resources.
