Module 4 Assignment

Assignment - EBP Project - Finding the Evidence

Assignment Instructions

In this assignment, students will be asked to create the initial steps of an evidence based practice project using your topic and the article you found in Module Two.  After completing the Module Four readings, the student will create a PICO question based on their topic. A PICOT worksheet has been included for you (below) to assist you with creating a PICO question. The student will locate several additional resources to answer their PICO question, and write this information into a paper using APA style. Please click on the link: Assignment EBP Project - Finding the Evidence (below) for more information, and watch your due dates and times carefully. For additional help, use the discussion board link found below this assignment.

Be very careful not to plagiarize in this assignment. Remember, if you use a source and do not cite it, that is plagiarism. If you have a direct quote from any source and it is not clearly indicated as a quote in your paper, then even if you cite it that is plagiarism. IF SEVEN OR MORE WORDS ARE THE SAME AS ANY SOURCE THAT IS A QUOTE AND MUST BE MARKED AS SUCH. If you only change one or two words from the source but keep the order of the ideas the same as in the original, that is plagiarism. Go back to the plagiarism tutorial or ask a librarian if you have any questions. Any instances of plagiarism detected will result in your failing the course and being referred to the Office of Community Standards.

First, identify each element of your PICO on the line below, then take a look at the templates below to help you formulate a PICO(T) question.

P: Population/disease ( i.e. age, gender, ethnicity, with a certain disorder)

P: ____________________________________________________________________

I: Intervention or Variable of Interest (exposure to a disease, risk behavior, prognostic factor) Note: Not every question will have an intervention (as in a meaning question – see below).

I: ____________________________________________________________________

C: Comparison: (could be a placebo or "business as usual" as in no disease, absence of risk factor).  Note: This is not used in a meaning question – see below.

C: ____________________________________________________________________

O: Outcome: (risk of disease, accuracy of a diagnosis, rate of occurrence of adverse outcome)

O: ____________________________________________________________________

T: Time: The time it takes to demonstrate an outcome (e.g. the time it takes for the intervention to achieve an outcome or how long participants are observed). This is an optional “add-on” for a PICO question.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For PICO questions about a nursing intervention/therapy:
In _______(P), what is the effect of _______(I) on ______(O) compared with _______(C) within ________ (T)?
For PICO etiology questions:
Are ____ (P) who have _______ (I) at ___ (increased/decreased) risk for/of_______ (O) compared with ______ (P) with/without ______ (C) over _____ (T)?
For PICO questions involving prevention:
For ________ (P) does the use of ______ (I) reduce the future risk of ________ (O) compared with _________ (C)?
For PICO questions that predict:
Does __________ (I) influence ________ (O) in patients who have _______ (P) over ______ (T)?
For PICO questions that want to know more about the meaning of…..
How do ________ (P) diagnosed with _______ (I) perceive ______ (O) during _____ (T)?
NURS4325 NURSING RESEARCH
RAC 1 Lee et al. 2016
1. Which choice below best reflects the problem statement for the instructor-assigned article?
Illness representation is described as the internal processes by which individuals create the definitions or the representations of a health threat.
Illness representations have been found to influence health-related outcomes in injured patients.
 Exploring the discrepancies between the illness perceptions of injured patients and their caregivers may provide a way of resolving the impacts caused by an injury.
Previous studies have indicated that injured patients do hold illness representations related to their injury.
2. Which of the choices below best reflects the purpose statement for the instructor assigned article?
Illness representations have been found to influence health-related outcomes in injured patients.
This comparative descriptive survey compared illness perceptions between injured patients and caregivers at 3 to 6 months after hospital discharge.
Researchers have shown interest in discrepancies in illness representations between patients and their caregivers.
Research has demonstrated that caregivers’ illness representations of negative consequences, emotional reactions, and controllability of an illness are correlated with their perceived care burden.
3. According to Lee, Fan, Hung, Pai, and Chou (2016), which of the following statements are important when considering the significance and relevance of a study’s problem and purpose? (Select all that apply.)
Does it build on previous research?
Does it predict the non-significant findings anticipated in the study?
Does it specifically influence nursing education in university settings?
Does it identify the future research to be generated by the study?
Does it promote theory testing or development?
Does it identify extraneous variables?
4. When considering the feasibility of a study’s problem and purpose,Lee, Fan, Hung, Pai, and  Chou (2016) suggest that several areas should be evaluated, including: researcher expertise, money commitment, ethical considerations, and availability of subjects, facilities, and equipment. Which of the following statements accurately assesses the feasibility of this article? (Select all that apply.)
Funding sources for the study were clearly identified.
The author’s credentials to design and conduct research are described.
100% of the eligible subjects contacted participated in the study.
Evidence of protection of the subjects’ rights was mentioned in this article.
5. According to Lee, Fan, Hung, Pai, and  Chou (2016) which one of the following is NOT a major purpose of the review of literature (ROL):
Describing the current knowledge of the practice problem.
Explaining the reasons behind the selection of the statistics used in the study.
Identifying gaps in the knowledge base of the practice problem.
Explaining how the current study contributes to the knowledge being built.
RAC 2 Lee et al. 2016
1. What sampling method or plan was used by the authors in this study?
Simple random sampling
Convenience sampling
Systematic sampling
Network sampling
2. According to Grove and Gray (2019), which of the following best describes the potential biases of this sampling method?
This is a strong probability sampling method with very little potential for bias.
This method is used when an ordered list of all members of the population are available, and provides a random but not equal chance for inclusion in the study.
This method provides little opportunity to control for bias because subjects are included in the study merely because they happen to be in the right place at the right time.
This method is specific to the individuals who were recruited and the information gained cannot be generalized to others who don't share these types of experiences.
 None of the above biases best describe the sampling method chosen by the author.
3. What was the final sample size reported by the authors for this study?
21 pairs of patients and caregivers
148 pairs of patients and caregivers
127 pairs of patients and caregivers
Unknown/cannot be determine
4. Was a power analysis conducted? If so, which statement best describes the results of the power analysis?
The authors mention that a power analysis was conducted using a power of 0.8, an alpha value of 0.5, and a moderate effect size.
The authors mention that an power analysis was conducted, and 127 matched pairs were determined to be needed for the study.
The authors do not report that a power analysis was conducted.
No answer text provided.
5. Which of these statements would be considered to be specific inclusion criterion for the sample in the research article?
The participants are able to understand English.
The participants are 20 years of age or older.
The participants are associated with a teaching hospital in Taiwan.
No inclusion criteria were specifically reported by the authors.
