Module 1 Discussion
EVIDENCE BASED RESOURCES
You have probably heard of evidence-based medicine, but have you heard of evidence-based resources? Like evidence-based practices, evidence-based resources are a compilation of published reviews covering interventions and studies to improve health. These peer-reviewed resources have been evaluated on ethical practices, quality, reliability, and other research specific qualifiers. This week, you will review the Healthy People 2030Links to an external site. website and their evidence-based resources.
Note: In grading every required Discussion posting, your Instructor uses a Discussion Rubric. Review the Rubric prior to completing your Discussion.
This Discussion will be available from Day 1 through Day 7 of this week. You are required to submit your initial post by Day 3. You are encouraged to post early. Once you have submitted your initial post, start responding with your colleagues. You must begin responding to your colleagues by no later than Day 5 and should continue to interact frequently with your colleagues through Day 7. Part of what makes a Discussion a discussion and not a lecture is the back and forth, in depth, animated interaction of at least two people. If you start a topic and none of your peers are responding to your post, consider what you can do to get the conversation going. Include something that would elicit further thoughts and different opinions from peers. Validate your opinions with references and links to the sources that you used so that your peers can read it for themselves. See your Discussion Rubric for specific grading requirements.

Post your response to the Discussion area in the Canvas classroom.
As health educators, our goals are to reduce disease and promote healthy behaviors. To educate our target populations to prevent disease, we must know how to effectively communicate with them. As part of this class, you will be expected to create health education communication messages for a target audience. In this class, you will create several health messages to inform and empower your target audience to make positive behavioral changes to prevent the risk of a health behavior or condition.
For this discussion, you will select your health education issue, population, and setting. Review the following website https://health.gov/healthypeople/tools-action/browse-evidence-based-resourcesLinks to an external site.
In your discussion post:
Identify one of the listed health education behaviors or conditions you want to improve and discuss why there is need (statistics encouraged).
Identify one of the population groups as your target audience to tailor your communication.
Identify a setting where this communication will be provided.
Create one goal for your health message to help reduce the health issue.
Use two reliable and current references to support your analysis of this topic.
BY DAY 5 OF WEEK 1
Respond to two classmates.
Critique your colleagues' sources. Are they reliable? Are they current?
Suggest additional resources that might help your colleagues to support their health communication message. Provide a rationale for why these additional resources are reliable.
Continue to engage in the Discussion until it ends on Day 7.
Information should be cited using APA style.

Module 2 Discussion
SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH, HEALTH EQUITY, AND HEALTH LITERACY.
How does low health literacy impact health outcomes? What populations are more likely to be impacted by health equity and have low health literacy levels? Low health literacy is associated with more hospitalizations, more visits to emergency rooms, and less use of preventative care. Low health literacy is related to poorer health behaviors and disease management. Therefore, it is important to address health literacy when designing health messages for specific populations. How does low health literacy impact health outcomes? Module 3 Discussion
UNCONSCIOUS BIAS
Jordyn lives on the south side of the city which is known for a high crime rate, poor school systems, and low-income families. She arrives at the local clinic across town. Dr. Rider is seeing her today and is aware of Jordyn’s living environment. How can Dr. Rider ensure Jordyn’s concerns are being heard and she receives the care she needs?
Health disparities can negatively impact health outcomes. Health disparities compounded with unconscious bias can reduce the quality of care provided to an individual. As diversity increases, health educators must be more aware of their unconscious bias. Through personal assessment and education, health educators can ensure they are providing quality care to all populations.

Module 4 Discussion 1
RELAYING INFORMATION IN A CRISIS SITUATION
It was a calm evening in a small town on the night of September 29, 2023. Parents were playing outside with their young children and teenagers were walking around town with their friends. Then devastation hit. A tanker truck carrying 7,500 gallons of anhydrous ammonia was involved in a crash. Immediately, the gas began to emanate into the air. Anyone in the vicinity was at risk of death.
Emergency response personnel needed to evacuate about 1,000 residents immediately.

Module 6 Discussion
HEALTH ADVOCACY
Health advocacy is the act of promoting health and well-being for the populations. It may include supporting health policies, empowering positive behavior change, reducing health disparities, promoting health equity, and preventing health issues. Advocating for health and positive health behaviors is one of the professional responsibilities of health educators. To be an effective health educator, health advocacy priorities represent a benchmark for informing the practice of health education. In many cases, health policy change might be more effective than health education. For this assignment, you will critique a health advocacy letter and suggest improvements.
Note:?In grading every required Assignment, your Instructor uses an Assignment Rubric. Review the Rubric prior to completing your Assignment.

To the Iowa State Senate
111 Seventh Street
Cedar Rapids, IA 52401
Dear Legislator/Senator,
Iowa is one of the few states in the United States without motorcycle helmet safety laws. I would like to educate motorcyclists on the benefits of wearing a helmet and the long-term health effects of brain injury if such an event would occur.
The current laws are not protecting our motorcyclist out on the road. Motorcyclists are more likely to die in a crash compared to those riding in an enclosed vehicle. Health effects from motorcycle crashes can result in long term traumatic brain injury resulting in an economic cost for society.
I am asking the current legislation to mandate all motorcycle riders to wear helmets. Please support Bill 586 to mandate motorcycle helmets for all riders in the state of Iowa.
Sincerely,
Student Walden
