ASSESSING HEALTH LITERACY

Carson works at the local health department as a community health educator, and he was asked to create a poster for high school students on the importance of sleep to support academic success. Before he starts, he wants to assess the reading level of his target population.

Understanding the health literacy level of your target audience is critical in improving health outcomes. Knowing how to assess your population is the first step in assisting your client in understanding their condition and ways to reduce the risk. For this assignment, you will ask an adult to consent to having their health literacy level assessed. You will then choose an assessment tool and assess their health literacy level.

Next, seek consent from an adult to perform the health literacy assessment.

Gather information on your selected adult such as age, gender, education level, race etc.

After assessing your client, write a tow-to-three page summary including the following:

Describe your client.

Analyze the assessment results.

Explain the relationship between your client’s social determinants of health and their results (For example explain how a low education level may result in a low health literacy level).

Use a minimum of one reference to support your analysis.
