Assessing, Diagnosing, and Treating Patients With Ectopic Pregnancies and Sexually Transmitted Infections

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that there are 20 million new cases of sexually transmitted infections every year in the United States (CDC, 2017). STIs may present serious health implications for infected patients—especially for those who are unaware of their health condition. Although they may occur at any age, STIs disproportionately affect younger adults ages 15–24, who account for more than half of all new infections (CDC, 2017). Studies also show that women are at greater risk of contracting these infections, and also tend to have more severe health problems resulting from infections than men (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2009). As an advanced practice nurse, it is important to emphasize the importance of prevention and STI testing for all individuals, regardless of age, sex, marital status, race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status.
